Bejewelled: How to fill your home with an abundance of jewel tones

Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but when it comes to interiors, it’s the rich hues of jewels which have the power to turn heads. Bright, energising shades such as sapphire, emerald and ruby are able to transform your home into a sumptuous retreat and Pantone has even named Ultra Violet as its pick of the year.

Jayson Branch, Creative Director at bespoke radiator company Castrads, gives us his top tips for working gem-inspired colours into your interiors, whether you’re going bold or making a subtler statement.

Anchor down

It’s true; jewel colours can be intimidatingly garish on the swatch card. However, by following a few simple rules these vibrant shades can breathe new life into any room, no matter what your style.

Always anchor down deeply saturated shades with a soft base. If you’re taking the plunge with a gem-inspired wallpaper or paint, go bold with a lacquered finish and keep the ceiling a light neutral shade to help bounce light around the room and create contrast.

To complete the look, match your radiators to your jewel shade or pick a soft metallic finish to make the colour really pop.

Mix it Up

When experimenting with a jewel palette, mixing up textures can bring your scheme together. Incorporate a modern high-gloss coffee table in softer jewel tones like rose quartz, amethyst, amber or topaz and contrast it with traditional touches like antique gold and brass, rich-grained or exposed wooden floorboards for a layered style.

Adding a faux-fur rug in a neutral shade can add even more warmth to a room and help to stop the jewel tones from overwhelming the space. Draping one over your armchair or dining bench will work to create additional depth in a room.

The beauty is in the detail

If you’re after a subtle look, a little goes a long way when it comes to this colour palette. For a touch of glamour, it’s easy to bejewel any room with carefully-selected accessories in a host of gem shades.

Let jewel touches play out in fine details around the room, in pieces of art, cut-glass vases, lacquered cabinets and luxurious throws. To help your jewel accessories dazzle even more, alternate them with more muted trinkets, or even furniture, in black or a dark matte grey.

For extra sophistication, you could even incorporate the real deal. Gemstone tiles or countertops in your kitchen or bathroom adds drama to the space, while remaining functional.

Make a statement

Every room needs a show-stopper. A jewel palette gives you the freedom to be bold in your choice and these shades are guaranteed to make a statement. A rich velvet sofa in a bright jewel hue works both in a rustic and a modern setting, as do upholstered armchairs in a bold, jazzy print.

In the bedroom, a headboard and bed frame upholstered in a rich turquoise will brighten up even the most neutral pallet and create a sophisticated and eye-catching centre piece. A bespoke radiator with intricate detailing or minimal sleekness powder-coated in an intense jewel shade can make a striking statement when set against neutral wall and flooring.
