UK-based Bernard Interiors was commissioned to design and project manage the redevelopment of a luxury second home in Marbella, Spain for a private client.
“The focus of the brief was to create a light and comfortable family residence with a contemporary European feel, that also encouraged relaxation and had space for hosting informal family and social gatherings,” commented Jen Bernard, founder and managing director of Bernard Interiors.
“Having worked closely with the client for many years we understood their vision for a luxurious, colourful and inviting place where the design for outdoor living is as important as the interior.”
Making the most of the villa’s coastal location was paramount for the client, so the three main ground floor spaces – living, dining and kitchen – were combined and now connect to the outside terrace with views across the gardens to the sea.
The terrace is multi-functional and works exceptionally well as an open plan social space for lounging or dining. A combination of comfortable seating surrounds a bespoke coffee table where family and friends can socialise with drinks or watch tv. The screen is concealed in a bespoke kitchen unit with a motorised lift. The outdoor kitchen houses everything needed including a fridge, freezer and storage for crockery and glassware.
Bernard Interiors designed furniture for the interior was made by a locally-based furniture maker using materials including highly glossed timbers, inlaid antique brass and leather.
The garden umbrellas were made for Bernard Interiors by Santa Barbara Designs in the US and bespoke outdoor furniture was also shipped from the US.
For the whole project around 80% of the furniture, doors and cabinetry is bespoke.
- Terrace – Outdoor fabrics by Hermes, Dedar, Abbott + Boyd were used for the cushions and the sofas are bespoke made by George Smith. A bespoke outdoor rug creates a real outdoor living feel.
Formal dining – A cabinet in highly glossed timber with inlaid antique brass and leather, and dining chairs upholstered in fabric by Creations Metaphores, Zimmer + Rohde, Abbott + Boyd are some of the many pieces made to Bernard Interiors’ designs for this project. The cabinet was made by a locally-based furniture maker. Chandelier by Villaverde, wall covering by Elitis.
Lounge – The open ground floor is coordinated throughout to enhance the sense of space and flow. In the lounge area the pale grey scheme is highlighted with pops of colour, bringing the outside in. The seascape artwork was commissioned from a local artist. The cabinetry is custom-made and the rug is a bespoke commission from Riviere.
- Kitchen – Custom cabinetry by Gunni & Trentino, with polished marble work tops and bespoke handles by Armac Martin. Bespoke stools by Justin van Breda upholstered in Dedar fabric.
