LEADING DESIGNER UNVEILS 2020 INDUSTRY TRENDS

Mark Barrell, Design Director at Boss Design, has unveiled the trends that are set to influence the market in 2020.

According to the leading designer, the continued movement towards mass personalisation will be a major trend during 2020.  Mark Barrell explains: “One-size-fits-all doesn’t fit anymore. Demand for personalisation has increased and is seen as an expectation rather than an aspiration. At Boss Design, our product development and manufacturing teams are gearing up to deliver this demand.”

There will also be a continuing rise of the WorkCafe Mark explains: “We’ll see a continued increase in the percentage of floor space given to hospitality environments within corporate workplace projects. Cafes are now everybody’s favourite places to meet clients and suppliers, and the premium coffee and tea industries continue to see double-digit growth year-on-year.

“The markets covering juices, shakes, smoothies and associated wellbeing initiatives are moving quickly to capitalise on the momentum and we will see a further increase in WorkCafe spaces throughout 2020.”

During 2019, there was a movement towards the softening of furniture in the workplace and this trend will continue during 2020 Mark confirms: “Expect to see workplaces become more residential, including more colour, more texture and less intrusive technology being used.

“The formal workplace will become a thing of the past and the relaxed workplace will become a feature of the future.

“Hotels will also become workplace hubs. More hotels are now actively promoting their public areas as co-working and touchdown spaces and this is leading to a requirement for more durable and ergonomically-sound furniture to fulfil this need.”

Power delivery through USB-C will also revolutionise the workplace. Almost every laptop manufacturer has now moved over to USB-C or has committed to do so by the end of 2020.

Mark Barrell explains: “The need to put three-pin plug sockets into furniture will soon become a thing of the past, as will USB-A charging. USB-C charging will soon takeover, however, in the meantime end users have got some very difficult decisions to make regarding the mix of power sockets they specify for this year’s projects.”

USB-C features a new, smaller connector shape that’s reversible so it’s easier to plug in. USB-C cables can carry significantly more power, so they can be used to charge larger devices like laptops and they also offer up to double the transfer speed of USB 3 at 10 Gbps.
